We Must Do Better
Mixing mentally disturbed people with lethal weapons is like mixing governing policy with religious dogma. History has shown the results are never good. Dealing with either of those combinations when they occur is never simple.
Imagine a deep wound on one of your limbs. Obviously a band-aid will not stop the bleeding. A tourniquet will stop the loss of blood, but if that is all you do gangrene will set in creating another set of problems.
I am reminded of the old adage about “treating the symptoms without curing the disease”. While the treatments may temporarily relieve the suffering, they do not prevent the symptoms from re-occurring.
Addressing societal ills while respecting the individual freedoms and liberties of the members of that society is challenging. Just as challenging is getting those individual members to recognize their obligation to that society. That requires a comprehensive approach and a concerted effort from all of us. We cannot allow ourselves to get diverted from that common goal or nightmare scenarios will continue to plague our society and it will fail.
We must demand better from our legislative representatives because that is their job. We must do better.
