Shared Memories

Memories can be tricky things. This is especially true in human relationships. Time has a way of not only amplifying, but also clouding individual memories. That is why even when two people recall events they shared from their past, the feelings evoked by those memories can be quite different. One may experience the sentiments expressed by “Nights in White Satin” while for the other those sentiments are more akin to “Diamonds and Rust”. While both sets of feelings are equally valid, reconciliation can be complicated by each individual’s underlying desire to cling to their own set of memories as a way of defining themselves.

The stories we tell ourselves are based on our perceptions of the world around and within us. More often than not there is more to those stories than we can perceive or are willing to acknowledge.
